The project required the design of a new function room and support facilities within the historic precinct of the Sydney Observatory and former Signal Station.

The new wing, hovering above the ground, accommodates functions, group events and education activities. It shelters a covered loggia beneath, where a compact café serves the museum as well as the adjacent parklands.

The competition scheme resolves planning and access to the historic complex. It explores dialogue between the physical place and universe beyond, oscillating between the ground plane, the sky and stars above.
